Courting Fair Damsels

By George Vosmik

Ah, fair maiden, come dance with me and we will while away the night!  That’s about a close as I ever to the courtier/maiden scene, but recently I began to woo a fair damsel – a

Damsel Fly.

For years I saw damsel flies in the fly catalogues and thought, I should try one some day.  Well a recent article caught me up in it and I finally decided to try one for trout and perhaps bass.  The recipe given was not to my liking; it used blue deer hair to form the body extended way back from the hook.  There had to be a better way.  So I played with a nice stiff feather stem from a Schloppen feather, bright blue marker colored, and it looked good to me.

Now about those gossamer wings folded together along the body… I will try Mylar sheet cut to shape and tied in as pair.  Looked great.  Tie a few and try them.

Hook: 94831 2x long.

Thread: black 6/0

Body: Schloppen feather stem colored Royal blue with permanent marker

Wing: Trimmed Mylar sheet tied down and cupped over the hook.

Thorax: Blue charm dubbing

Hackle: Cream dry fly hackle

Head: Black thread tied large.

Trial day at Rockwell Springs proved to me that the fish loved the damsel – they not only courted her - but also ate off her wings with the second strike and landed fish. They ate four flies, in two hours of fishing, down to the stem body and a little hackle.

The revised design now uses a wing make of Schloppen feather flues in bundles of 15-20 with two or three Krystal flash.

The hackle may also be tied parachute to allow the fly to set lower in the film as the natural bad swimming damsels do.

Court the Damsel and get a great surprise as I did this year.
